When cutting glass for stained glass projects, I often want to cut intricate pieces that are hard or even impossible to do by hand. Since glass is a brittle material that tends to crack and shatter when subjected to the intense pressure and friction, one must use specialized tools designed for this purpose. Here are a few common tools, including electric saws for cutting glass:
- Glass Cutter: This is the most common tool for cutting glass. It has a small, hardened wheel that scores the glass surface. After scoring, the glass can be broken along the score line. Glass cutters are available in various types, including hand-held cutters and oil-filled cutters.
- Tile Cutter: While primarily designed for cutting ceramic tiles, some tile cutters can be used for cutting glass tiles as well. They work by scoring the surface of the glass and then snapping it along the scored line.
- Diamond Saw: A wet tile saw with a diamond blade can be used for cutting glass. The diamond blade helps minimize chipping, and the wet cutting process helps keep the glass and blade cool.
- Glass Ring Saw: This is a specialized saw designed for intricate and curved cuts in glass. It uses a circular diamond-coated blade that can rotate 360 degrees, allowing for precise and detailed cuts.
- Glass Band Saw: This type of saw is designed specifically for cutting curves in glass. It has a continuous band of toothed metal that rotates around two pulleys, allowing for more versatile cutting.
I have decided to get a Glass Ring saw. Figuring which is the “best” one can depend on your specific needs, preferences, and budget. The two most popular on the market these days are the Gemini Taurus 3 Ring saw and the Gryphon Zephyr Diamond Ring Saw. After studying both brands- this is what I have found out:

Gemini Taurus 3 Ring Saw

Gryphon Zephyr Diamond Ring Saw
Both saws include these features:
- Diamond-Coated Blade: Both of these saws utilize a diamond-coated round blade. Diamond blades are known for their durability and ability to make clean cuts on glass.
- 360-Degree Blade Rotation: Both saws have a 360-degree blade rotation, allowing for versatile cutting in various directions.
- Water Cooling System: All Glass saws need a water cooling system to keep the blade and the glass cool during the cutting process. This helps prevent the glass from overheating and reduces the risk of chipping or cracking and thus ensuring smooth cuts that usually eliminate the need for additional grinding.
- Versatility: These ring saws are versatile and suitable for a variety of cutting applications, including straight cuts, curves, and inside curves. They are used for cutting glass, ceramics, tiles, stones, plastics, composites and many metals. They also break apart and can be used as a hand held saw.
- Quiet Operation: Both brands are reported to run “quietly”
- Both have a three year warranty
Side by side differences:
Taurus Gryphon
Volt/amp- both cannot be used with a voltage converter:
110 or 220 1.3-1.7 amps 120v
Horse power 1/5 1/3
Depth of “throat” 5 5/8” 6 5/8”
Height clearance 1 1/2” 1 1/2”
Built in light yes no
Weight 14 pounds 18 pounds
Work space: 17-3/4″ x 16” 17.5” x 17.5”
Removable face shield yes attached
Includes instructional video: yes no
After looking at all my comparisons I was leaning toward the Gryphon I like the horse power and throat depth- it is also usually over $100 cheaper than the Taurus!
Next I studied the reviews- and changed my mind. The reviews about the functionality, construction, water leakage, maintenance ease of use… all point out that the Taurus is a FAR better saw. Since I plan to only get one saw- and not replace it for MANY years- I am going with the Taurus.
When purchasing any tool, it’s a good idea to check for the latest reviews and user feedback to ensure that you are aware of any recent developments or improvements. Additionally, consider factors such as customer support, warranty, price and availability of replacement parts when making your decision.
Please note that product information and availability may have changed. Always refer to the latest information from the manufacturer or authorized dealers for the most accurate and up-to-date details. Check the specifications of the saw, and, if possible, try out the saw in person to see how it feels and handles.
Remember that safety precautions are crucial when working with glass. Always wear safety glasses and consider using other protective gear. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and recommendations for the specific tool you are using.
Hope this helps!
