Incorporating glass crystals into your art will add depth, interest, sparkle and dimension. The choice of crystals to use in stained glass primarily depends on the aesthetic and design goals of your project. Here are some popular choices for crystals in stained glass:
- Faceted Glass Crystals: These are commonly used for their ability to reflect light and create a sparkling effect. They come in various shapes and sizes, including round, teardrop, and rectangular. Clear or colored faceted crystals can be used to enhance the overall appearance of the stained glass. These are your basic crystals and will probably be the lest expensive on the market.
- Swarovski Crystals: Swarovski is a renowned brand for high-quality crystal products. They offer a wide range of crystal shapes, sizes, and colors. Swarovski crystals are known for their exceptional clarity and brilliance, making them a popular choice for stained glass artists. Because of their quality, these crystals is be more expensive than the basic crystals.
- Austrian Crystal Beads: These beads are also known for their quality and sparkle. They come in various shapes and sizes, and you can incorporate them into your stained glass design as accents or to create specific patterns.Because of their quality, these crystals are also often more expensive than the basic crystals.
- Glass Nuggets: Glass nuggets, sometimes called globs or jewels, are thick, rounded pieces of colored glass that can be used to add texture and dimension to your stained glass design. They come in various sizes and colors. Glass nuggets are smooth- not faceted- but still add fun dimensions and reflections.
- Dichroic Glass: Dichroic glass is known for its iridescent and color-shifting properties. It can add a unique and eye-catching element to your stained glass artwork. Dichroic glass is usually quite expensive, thus often used as small accent glass.
- Beads: Beads come in many sizes and can be a fun addition to projects. Faceted beads reflect light and add dazzle to your work. Small seed beads can be used to create delicate accents and patterns in your stained glass. They are available in a wide range of colors and can be used to outline shapes or add intricate detail.
- Rhinestones: While not traditionally used in stained glass, rhinestones can add a modern and glamorous touch to your design. They come in various shapes, sizes, and colors. Rhinestones traditionally come with a foiled mirror backing and are intended to be sewed or glued in place. When I use them in stained glass projects- I remove the foil backing so light can shine through.
- Cabochons: Clear smooth glass shapes often used over printed works or as used as a watch face. These come in various shapes and sizes and are a fun addition to your work.
- Beveled glass and kits: Glass manufactures also off a wild variety of beveled glass, both sold separately and designed to be combined to make a larger design. Beveled glass is glass that is usually flat in the back and has straight angles cut in it to catch the light. These can be costly but are also very beautiful.
There are many other glass items I have also used such as sea glass and glass figurines. When selecting crystals for your stained glass project, consider the overall design, color scheme, and the effect you want to achieve. It’s important to securely attach the crystals to the glass using copper foil or lead came. Additionally, make sure the crystals are compatible with the temperature and soldering process involved in stained glass work. Do not used acrylic crystals as they will melt during the soldering process.

Glass crystals used in various artistic and decorative applications come in a wide range of shapes. The shape of the crystal can greatly influence the visual impact of the piece. Here are some common shapes of glass crystals:
- Round: Round crystals are one of the most common shapes and are often used for their classic and versatile appearance. They can be used to create a traditional, elegant, or contemporary look.
- Teardrop: Teardrop-shaped crystals resemble water droplets or tears and are often used to add a touch of elegance or romance to a design. They can be used for both traditional and modern stained glass projects.
- Oval: Oval crystals provide a more elongated and sleek appearance. They are used to create a sense of movement and can add a unique dynamic to the design.
- Square: Square or rectangular crystals offer a clean and geometric appearance. They are often used in modern or contemporary stained glass designs and can create a sense of symmetry and order.
- Heart: Heart-shaped crystals are a symbol of love and affection, making them popular in designs that evoke feelings of romance and sentimentality.
- Star: Star-shaped crystals are used to add a sense of celestial wonder to a design. They can be used in projects with a celestial theme or to represent stars in the sky.
- Flower: Crystal flowers are designed to mimic the appearance of flowers or petals. They add a touch of nature and femininity to the design.
- Hexagon: Hexagonal crystals have six sides and are used to create a more structured and tessellated pattern. They are often used in modern or art deco designs.
- Custom Shapes: Some glass crystal manufacturers offer custom shapes, allowing artists to create unique and highly personalized designs.
- Assorted Shapes: Some crystal sets include an assortment of different shapes, providing more flexibility and creativity for the artist.
When choosing crystal shapes for your project, consider the overall design, theme, and the effect you want to achieve. Mixing and matching different crystal shapes can also add visual interest and complexity to your stained glass artwork.
